Japanese teacups Sometsuke are small cute teacups, without handle. The upper edge is slightly bent forward, which gives them an elegant appearance.
The porcelain is painted under the glaze, this technique is called Sumetsuke. Literally sometsuke means to apply dye.
This technique originally came from China, but later it also had an influence in Japan.
Sometsuke is made in several regions of Japan, such as Kyoto, Seto, Hasami, Mikawachi and Kutani, and also in Arita (the origin of Japanese porcelain), now known as Imari.
