If you like to drink Japanese tea, these Japanese teacups Sometsuke are very nice to drink tea from. Characteristic of these teacups is that they have no handle and that the edge is slightly bent forward, which makes these cups very elegant.
Sometsuke is a technique in which porcelain is painted under the glaze. Literally, sometsuke means to apply dye. These teacups are painted with this technique.
This technique originally came from China, but later it also had an influence in Japan.
Sometsuke is made in several regions of Japan, such as Kyoto, Seto, Hasami, Mikawachi and Kutani, and also in Arita (the origin of Japanese porcelain), now known as Imari.
